Recent historic and cartographic research, coupled with the analysis of the archaeological materials recovered from sites along the entire south shore of lake Erie, has called into question earlier specualtions concerning the specific ethnic and linguistic affiliation of many of the latest prehistoric occupations in the differing regions from southeastern Michigan, west nearly to Niagara Falls.
