This book has been produced with the intention of presenting, within the compass of a single volume, the history of The South Lancashire Regiment (The Prince of Wales's Volunteers) from the formation of Philipps's Regiment of Foot in 1717 to the end of the Second World War.The task of compressing within the prescribed limits the eventful history of a fighting regiment which has taken part in nearly every campaign in which British troops have been engaged over a period of more than two hundred years has not been an easy one, and the solution has been found in treating the campaigns of the distant past in little more than broad outline, while emphasising the special part played in them by the Regiment, and in recounting the great events of the two World Wars in much greater detail.
