The Sound of Suffering

Malcolm Turner has suffered from what he thought was tinnitus all his life. Of late, the episodes make him feel like his brain is bleeding, depriving him of sleep and working away at his already faltering marriage and stale career. Little hope remains.

Desperation leads him to a chatroom and a group of similar folks who call themselves 'The Undertones.' After a series of shared experiences, the group contemplate that this bane of their lives may not be a curse but a gift-- free-thinking radicals picking up on something other than the grind of the machine. As sinister events begin to unfold around the world, 'The Undertones' become convinced that this noise in their ears might hold the key to these horrors. Malcolm has already tasted grief, but the stakes are as high as they come this time. Will he get answers before his world comes tumbling down?

An amazing horror

I love books where the characters are just as clueless of the readers. "What's going on?!?" I have no idea, Frank, truly not a clue. That cluelessness doesn't leave the reader in the slightest through the entire book. BUT, that's what adds to the scare factor of this story. We, the readers, are kept just as in the dark as our MC is. We have no idea what's going on or why, we have just a few scenes Malcolm doesn't have, and no answer as to why they've happened. Personally, I loved it. Most horror doesn't faze me in the slightest, but this one really made my brain think. Everything that happens, happens to the very extreme, until our delightfully confused cast of characters are losing their very sanity trying to figure things out. The underlining theme is a very real threat to our way of life. I really liked how Towse took this actual threat and how little it's talked upon and wove a story. Think of it as being akin to Ferngully... Only it's not for kids, there's no fairies, the rainforest being destroyed is only a small part of the problem, and it's horror. Everything serves and feeds the machine... Perhaps it's time we starved the fuqer. I give this book 5 of 5 Paws.
