Caitlyn has more imagination than friends. One day while playing in the snow an accident happens and she falls into a different world. This world has princes and castles and, above all else, a unicorn. She and the unicorn can communicate, and he tells her about this world she has entered. He introduces her to many people, including Elsie, a woman who lives in a house that looks like it's made of gingerbread. Elsie tells her that not everyone needs a prince.Caitlyn is as abruptly taken out of this world and back to her own as she was brought into it. She takes it all with good grace, since her beloved unicorn is still there.She is torn from the happiness of the magical world yet again, and doesn't know whether or not she'll ever have the opportunity to return.Just as she's about to leave for college, she once again finds herself back in the magical world. Her beloved unicorn is dying and she must decide whether to stay forever or return to her own world, never to come back to the magical world again. Her decision becomes final as the unicorn takes his final breath.
