The Smoking Steps was written in 1983, when the author was living in New Haven, Connecticut. It was designed to be the great American novel at the close of the 20th century. Instead, it became an exotic foray into East European religious history, and that account comprises the Overture. The Overture is the historical background of the lead character of the story, a Romanian orthodox priest. Yet, the 1983 New Haven setting of the novel is never reached. Modernity is never arrived upon. The Overture is the history of the families that led to the personal identity of the Romanian priest. Thus ends the lesson.
