Sheila Zook's fianc is in jail (they are both Amish). He was framed but readers don't know that in the beginning, we just know that he is jailed and she wants to help him. She realizes that the only way she can travel to the jail 60 miles away is by walking along a river through a state park. She starts her journey on foot, even staying in the park overnight. ohn is trying to maintain his ranch but needs extra help. He is looking for an extra pair of hands who won't ask for pay. He meets Sheila right by the outside of the park. She has been walking for two days and has wasp sting sand blistered feet. He helps her get to the jail to visit the fianc , then makes an agreement with her. She can stay at the ranch for a while (that way she's close enough to visit the fianc ) if she helps him with the ranch work for free.In the following month, Sheila takes on multiple chores, producing goat milk for sale and caring for the horses. She writes letters home, trying to get the community to see the boy she likes in a gentler light. She visits him frequently. Sheila also learns that there is a farm she has a chance of getting for herself. At first she wants to give the farm to her fianc for their future together. But meanwhile, she's developing an attraction for John, her boss. Sheila has to sort out what means more to her: following her heart and growing respect and attraction for John or her sense of duty towards the fianc that everyone else is rejecting back home?A standalone short story ending Happily Ever After.
