The Sisters of Crimson House

An instant USA Today bestseller and a Goodreads editors' September pick For fans of Starling House, The September House, and Practical Magic comes a haunting Southern Gothic horror following one woman from a long line of psychics who will do anything to save her family legacy and the haunted house she grew up in from an entity threatening to destroy everything she's built.

Every house has its secrets.

Charley Bryde is miserable in a house filled with magic. The only woman in a long line of famous psychics to not inherit the family gift, she spends her days inside Crimson House, the coveted family mansion in Memphis, Tennessee, living in the shadows of her talented older sister, Miranda. But when a shocking tragedy scatters the Brydes across the globe, Charley is forced to grow up on her own, and fast. As the money runs dry and Charley's ownership of Crimson House is put at risk, she's left with no other option; turn the manor into a haunted attraction and start representing the family brand with lies, cons, and expertly read tarot cards.

When a skeptic starts targeting Charley for the fraud that she is, she'll stop at nothing to save the family legacy. But the skeptics' arrival cracks something open in Charley that the Brydes wanted to remain buried. Deep. And when Miranda shows up unannounced after eight years away, the two will come to realize that Crimson House, and their own family, hold secrets even the greatest psychics couldn't foresee. Secrets that will threaten to destroy them.

Southern Gothic

Once, the Bryde family was rich with an awesomely gothic house where they would host exclusive parties with performances of their special talents (seances, finding lost people/things, healing, etc.) until tragedy strikes with death and everybody leaving, except Charley (the only one with no talent) to maintain the house now falling to ruin. Fantastically creepy setting that I could see so well and I was hooked to see what would happen with Charley, especially once things started happening to her. It was interesting to see the story unfold, jumping from present to past, connecting separate threads and weaving together a truth that was the downfall of the Brydes as well as a way to heal what was broken and hopefully save the survivors of the legacy of the Bryde family. Love the Southern charm and darkness in this book and those psychic talents given to the other members of the family (especially Miranda!) are awesome but also totally creepy and while I could see why Charley felt left out as the only one with no star or talent and therefore felt compelled to save the family manor I think I would have left that house long ago! But I enjoyed her relationships with her stalwart friends who always had her back, even when things really hit the fan! I enjoyed reading this book a lot and I think it is a well done Southern gothic debut. Many thanks to Sourcebooks Landmark for giving me the chance to discover a new author and her gothic novel. It will be fun to see what she writes about next.
