Eupeithis is a princess whose father has no sons. Therefore, she'll marry whomever he designates as Thespiai's future king. But she wants assurances that she isn't merely a consolation prize who comes with a kingdom. When a prince from a powerful city shows up and secures a deal to marry her the next day, Eupeithis thwarts their plans by escaping at night.

But running away has consequences beyond the mortal realm. The god of love and Thespiai's patron, Eros, interprets Eupeithis's flight as a rejection of himself, so he curses her to fall hopelessly in love with the first man she sees. The goddess of the soul, Psyche, defends Eupeithis and gifts her with a means of protection from Eros's curse.

When a hunter named Orthios finds Eupeithis in the wilderness, he insists that she allow him to guide her to freedom in Amazonia. Together, they fight their way through traps set by Eros and other dangers of the Greek Dark Age world. But Eros will not allow Eupeithis to escape him easily, and Orthios becomes entangled in the god of love's designs. To save the man who has risked everything for her, Eupeithis may have to give up everything of herself.
