The Siege of Boston was a series of battles and skirmishes fought between the British and the American colonies in and around the city of Boston, Massachusetts in the early days of the American Revolutionary War. The conflict began in April 1775, when British troops were sent to seize weapons and ammunition stored by the colonists, and escalated into a full-scale war. The British ultimately evacuated the city in March 1776 after a prolonged siege by the Continental Army, led by General George Washington. The battle was significant in that it was the first major engagement of the Revolutionary War and marked the beginning of open hostilities between the colonies and Great Britain.
