Not A Fan- Disappointing

Poor job by Carol Marinelli! I've read much by her- and usually am pleased with her work. Colossal NO with this effort! The time period is not clear-; not stated and unable to discern in reading. Without that visual in my mind- set customs, fashions of the period, character expectations, current events or typical business ventures of the period- made it impossible to connect with the essence of the characters and their behaviors. The protagonists, Aurora Messina and Nico Caruso are not interesting; their characters lack depth and range. Being Sicilian is the only clue the reader has to base the behaviors and morals of the characters upon- and that I gleaned from past reads. Without understanding if this setting is Old World Sicilian values, or more evolved sentiments of present time make it impossible to discern just how negligible a Love-Child might be for Nico and how detrimental single parenthood is for Aurora. Is the scandal applicable to society as a whole or to Sicilian culture? Neither character demonstrates much personal growth or self-discovery- no broad sweeping realizations about relationships, parenthood or family. Just casual acceptance of what has been- and it appears what will continue to be. No romance, no steam. No fabulous conclusion to redeem the story. Completely disappointing! I persisted only because I was out of reading material and was home-bound. It took forever to get through. Big thumbs down.
