The Shoehorn

Tinsley Jenkins appears to have everything a young man could wish for: good health, good looks, an excellent education, promising career paths, a healthy trust fund, and a respected family. But he has pondered for so long how to fit into society that his endeavors often emulate the function of a shoehorn, without ever being sure in which shoe to fit.

The graduation, the day that is supposed to signal the start of a new life, brings out unexpected awareness that has eluded him for many years. Tinsley is as startled by his own sentiments as his family members around him. He wonders why so many people, himself included, wasted so much time and money to be present at this Cap and Gown Convention. He feels embarrassed that such awareness came to him so late.

Tinsley's embarrassment is compounded by remembering that he was told by his father on more than one occasion that colleges were essentially day care centers that delayed growing pains for American teenagers, as well as providing an alibi for the parents that they have done their parental duty by putting their kids through college. Tinsley had always attributed his father's views to prejudice and arrogance. But now, it is the height of irony that all the talk by his father finally intersects with his thinking at this dramatic moment.
