Most musicians can't write their way out of a paper bag, so I resisted buying this book until I saw it recommended in a major newspaper as one of the best summer reads. I can't describe how much I enjoyed this collection of short stories. Each story was totally engaging and unique. Some were meaningful and mysterious, while others were outrageously funny. Each night I grew to anticipate and savor a new tale, hoping that this wonderful book would never end. If you have any kind of connection to Hawaii, or just want to visit there, don't pass this one up. Beamer is a remarkable exception, a truly gifted musician who knows how to write a great story.
Hilarious and tearful

Slack-key guitar master Keola Beamer's first exploration into the world of authorship translates the same sensitivities and range of expression found in his music onto the written page. From breakout laughter at his self-deprecating autobiographical tales of boat ownership (My Beautiful Puka and film producer (Our Ticket to Cannes) to weeping at the loss of precious things (Hanau Hope)to entering the local world view of Pidgin (Stalking Haunani), The Shimmering will take the reader on a wild ride that's well worth the read. Anyone from the Islands suffering a tinge of homesickness will appreciate the voice of this local boy. Everybody else who loves a good yarn will come out the other side of this book smiling and wondering what the author has planned for his next creation.
