The Shaykh of Al-Sakhra

The Shaykh of Al-Sakhra is an epic, theological adaptation of Alexandre Dumas's classic tale of betrayal and redemption, transposed to the historic Red Sea ports of Yanbu and Jeddah, and the holy city of Medina. The narrative follows Hamza Al-Ansari, a vigorous twenty-year-old mariner and captain-elect of Al-Safina Al-Mubaraka. His bright future is shattered on his wedding day when he is falsely accused of carrying politically subversive documents. This conspiracy is driven by the Satanic envy of Aisha's cousin, Fahd, who desperately covets Hamza's betrothed; the greed of the ship's clerk, Ziyad Al-Hifzi; and the self-serving worldly ambition of the court deputy Sa'id Ibn Sulayman, who burns the evidence to protect his own dissident father.

Hamza is unjustly cast into the subterranean darkness of the desolate island fortress, Qal'at Al-Bahr, where he languishes in solitary confinement. After five years, his despair is broken by Sheikh Zakariya Al-Asari, a paralyzed scholar of Hadith and Aqeedah locked in the adjacent cell. Zakariya transforms the prison into a sanctuary of sacred learning, teaching Hamza Islamic sciences and the pure Athari creed. Before his peaceful death, the Sheikh bequeaths to Hamza the secret of a colossal ancient treasure hidden on the rocky island of Al-Sakhra.

Escaping miraculously inside the Sheikh's canvas burial shroud cast into the ocean, Hamza uncovers the immense fortune of gold and gems. Under masterfully assumed identities-such as the Western scholar Sheikh Giacomo Busoni and the merchant Yusuf Al-Rumi-he launches a calculated campaign of justice. He rescues his former benefactor, Sheikh Abu Bakr, from bankrupt ruin, humbles his oppressors through their own transgressions, and ultimately learns to submit his desire for personal revenge to the supreme decree of Al-Qadir. This sweeping adventure beautifully contrasts the fleeting, usurious illusions of the dunya with the enduring power of beautiful patience (Sabr) and reliance upon Allah.
