"Love is an outreach and cannot be properly administered without discipline." I begin this introduction to The Shameful Journey with this sentence taken from chapter 19 because the author told me to, and since we have been married these fifty years, and because she has herself taken the shameful journey, it seemed both safe and fitting so to do.This book may seem confused and irreverent at times because it presents Jesus and God's plan warts and all as seen through the fully focused eyes of one who has abandoned her life to God through Jesus Christ (Galatians 2:20) at a very early age and never turned back; faltered, stumbled, trembled from uncertainty, gotten it wrong when she thought she was right, and gotten it right when she thought she was wrong, but never taken back what she had given over. This book is not one of those, "If I can do it, so can you!" books. So if you are looking for the five secrets to a happy, successful, worldly living, you may want to turn your eyes away now, while you still have time. However, if you've been depressed, and have felt you have gotten it wrong because you have suffered the Christian life, then you may find in this book the comfort of a fellow sojourner. Take this as a warning! As you read these chapters you will encounter a naked account of ignorance which leads to real persecution, followed by very real suffering, complicated by misunderstanding which causes offence to others, and ends in brokenness at the foot of the cross with the gentle hand of the risen Christ resting on your shoulder. You can find worldly comfort on every street corner, but that hand, on your shoulder, can only come from your shameful journey. The author has written five novels prior to The Shameful Journey. All of her books deal with common social issues that plague Christian living. Her time of writing was from the late 1960's to the mid 1970's. She wrote by the inspiration of the Holy Spirit; when He was done she was silent. In addition to her books she has written and taught Bibles Studies, written Christian poetry, had an active mentoring and counseling ministry, and raised three children. She also served as organist and choir director when needed, served as minister of visitation, and ran her own business. With her first two novels in publication she traveled extensively for book signings and speaking engagements until she made the decision to stop traveling so that she would be close to her family.Even though we were raised in Christian homes there were no ministers in our families, only successful professional and business people. The transition into ministry completely, and violently, changed our life view. She chose to attribute the book of Hebrews to the Apostle Paul, though the authorship is uncertain. The "shadow" (Holy Spirit) led us to Evansville, but our children all suffered there. The prayers at the end of each chapter were written by our daughter Beth (age 10). They come through her own struggle to grow into adulthood, and form an early part of her own Shameful Journey.Scripture verses were taken from the TEV (Good News Bible). The opening line of this introduction views Love as God's saving/reclaiming action, and discipline as a full and absolute devotion to God the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.Rev.
