Paula: 1996Paula was Jewish, from New York, went to the University of Michigan for her PhD in American Studies. I first met Paula when I was working for NBC News as a freelancer. I met her in 1995 at a party given by one of my authors, Amy Kaminsky, the chair of the Women Studies department and head of the Center of Advanced Feminist Studies at the University of Minnesota (where I was to be visiting professor in 2000-2001). Paula was separated from her hubby (who had a PhD in math at the University of Michigan) at that point. She had 2 kids, Jacob (12) and Raphael, who was Nelson's age (5). I then had the house on 2211 22nd Avenue South. We had gone out to lunch at Sawatdees, a Thai restaurant on Washington Avenue South, not that far from downtown Minneapolis. It was a two-hour lunch where we discoursed and ate and drank red wine. She was also a Capricorn like me. The two hours for me was like making love to her with words. She later told John Mowitt, a friend of mine and a professor in English and comparative literature, the same thing on her side.
