Alina has come to England from Romania with her husband, her mother and daughter to find work as a nurse. Her husband is a drunk, gambler and an abuser, who sees her as no more as chattel. He both terrifies and disgusts Alina, but she stays to protect her daughter. She wants to do well professionally for herself and take care of her daughter and mother but feels trapped in the relationship - until an event happens that forces her to make changes.

Dee is a laboratory technician who lives in London, at first with her friend and university colleague, and then later with her husband whom she also met at university. She is ambitious but also a little dissatisfied with her life, and married life particularly. Her dissatisfaction ultimately leads to her taking risks with her marriage and friendships to satisfy an inner desire.
