A wonderful insight into the lives in an English Country House

If you love stories about the servants below stairs this is great reading. This book relates how the lives of staff and family were in the days of the "big house". Each of the staff had their own responsibilities and a code of living and hierarchy. You are able to follow the history of the house in terms of housemaids and carpenters who cleaned and maintained it, or the careers of the cooks and butlers, housekeepers and ladies' maids, grooms and the nannies. All essential to the running of the "big house". This book gives an insight into how all great houses must have worked and is excellently illustrated Learn about the family and their children, who never threw out anything (thankfully). For me, this was absolutely absorbing reading.
