Book Overview
The Sentinel Creed by Ernest O. Reeves is a thoughtful leadership and institutional responsibility book centered on vigilance, accountability, belonging, and ethical authority before crisis begins. The subtitle frames the book around "Leadership, Vigilance, and Responsibility Before Crisis."
Rooted in the American experience but written for a wider global audience, this book asks urgent questions that apply to every institution: Who belongs? Who decides? Who bears the cost when authority fails? Through reflections on history, public trust, civil rights, immigration, military service, policing, protest, voting, leadership under pressure, mentorship, and legacy, Reeves presents a disciplined framework for those who carry responsibility in positions of influence.
At the heart of the book is the Sentinel Creed, a call for leaders to stand watch with restraint, care, and moral clarity. The book argues that institutions do not usually fail suddenly; they drift when vigilance fades, accountability weakens, and responsibility becomes too easy to avoid.
Drawing from lived experience as a Black man, immigrant, combat veteran, and civil servant, Reeves explores how conditional belonging can weaken trust within institutions and how leaders can respond with courage, responsibility, and ethical discipline.
The Sentinel Creed is for leaders, veterans, public servants, students, mentors, managers, and anyone who wants to understand how trust is built, how power should be exercised, and why true leadership begins before crisis appears. It is not just a theory of leadership. It is a discipline of vigilance, responsibility, and care.
