When Barbara Bricklebank a lonely accident prone, thirty something woman orders a pizza on line for the first time, her life is never going to be the same again. For in doing so her location is broadcast to the hidden town where her parents originally came from. Luckily for Barbara her mysterious aunt Jonty is close by and is quick to whisk the reluctant Barbara to safety, at least for a short while, telling her to read her late mother diaries, which will tell her all she needs to know about her parents and the town they ran away from. New Snorscombe is somewhere, where people live alongside our world, hidden away, and they have done so for hundreds of years, in a place that was founded by a man called Laurence Hayle, known as The Magic man, who was murdered in 1613. Malcolm Priest an old school friend of Barbara's helps her to hide, but there is something familiar about him, for he bears a strong resemblance to the statue of Laurence Hayle in New Snorscombe. So begins a journey for Barbara who has always felt like a very small fish in the tiniest of fish bowls, swimming around and around, but never getting anywhere and for Malcolm and Jonty too, as secrets and lies, old rivalries, and new beginnings take them all on a journey of discovery.
