"This was a secret war, whose battles were lost or won unknown to the public ... No such warfare had ever been waged by mortal men."SIR WINSTON CHURCHILLThe Second World War, Vol. II This description may be from another edition of this product.
This is a well-written, solid book on a fascinating subject. Covering a wide range of topics, this book describes the unusual weapons and structures that the British designed in WWII. From steam powered canons and dazzle guns designed to blind incoming pilots, to artificial harbors, a large array of devices are described. Some weapons were impossible (searchlights that solidified), some were useful if not practical, and some ended up becoming vital (hedgehog anti-submarine mortars). This book also highlights the problems of a group of youne scientists and engineers in trying to move projects through the layers of the British Admirality. Some of the lessons and work-arounds devised were ingenious.Highly recommended.
