Oh Those Musical Seductresses...

si·ren \s'rn\ n 1 : any of a group of female and partly human creatures in Greek mythology that lured mariners to destruction by their enchanting music 2 : a woman who makes bewitchingly beautiful music 3 : a temptingly beautiful woman On Roxy's sixteenth birthday, she is somehow miraculously transformed from band geek to gorgeous seductress. Roxy's grandmother explains that this is because Roxy is a Siren, the definition of which is above. At first, Roxy is skeptical, but then she starts to get used to charming boys to get what she wants. With the aid of her flute, Roxy snags her hot crush, passes her driving test, and becomes a model, among other things. But there are two rules; Roxy can't tell anyone she's a Siren, and she can't fall in love either. If she breaks these rules, she loses her powers and the person she loves will die. Everything seems so simple at first - until Roxy starts falling in love. The Secret Life of a Teenage Siren was a very fun and satisfying read. I really enjoyed how Wendy Toliver incorporated mythology into a funny modern story. The story was sweet yet predictable, but that didn't make me like it any less. Anyone who loves the other Simon Pulse Romantic Comedies will also love this enjoyable novel. reposted from http://thebookmuncher.blogspot.com

I loved this book

Roxy's 16th birthday is like no other. She is a band geek and doesn't appeal to the boys she wants and then she is transformed into a Siren (in a very logical historical way). She suddenly has power over all men and as she discovers this power and as she begins to use it she creates chaos in her life and among her true friends. Roxy and her friends speak as we do. They are just like me and my friends (of course with out the magical powers) but there is so much of this wonderful read that is magically like our lives. We can extrapolate and see the powers we have and know at the end of the book we have made new friends or at least better understand the friends we do have. I loved the book. It was a quick read because you won't want to put it down. It is perfectly written with neat references to shopping and malls and a changing room from beyond the stars. This is a book that just begs to be a movie! Each changing scene is visualized so completely that I could just see the characters as they emerged and changed, This is more than a coming of age story. It gives us insight into what is really important and lets us realize we each have magical powers without a flute but I love what Roxy does with her new powers. There is of course a love interest, dreamy wonderful and I won't say anything about that to spoil the wonderful dreamy ending. On a scale of 1 to 10 it is a 15.! Anna R 15 1/2

Who hasn't wanted to be siren?

I believe there comes a moment in every teenage girl's life when she wishes she could have all the boys around her fall in love and do as she asks - all by twinkling her nose. Or playing a flute - as it is with Roxy. Roxy is a "band geek" and has great, true friends. But as it is with most teens - they all want to be a part of the popular "in" crowd. Roxy is secretly in love with Zach, one of the school's hotties and wishes that he would feel the same about her. On her 16th birthday, Roxy unexpectedly turns into a siren. Apparently, it's passed down through the generations and her grandmother is there to help her with her transformation from slightly geeky - to drop dead gorgeous. Yeehoo! But, as it is in life, with the good comes the bad. What will Zach think of her now? Will she be a part of the in-crowd? Can her friends handle the new Roxy? Can Roxy handle the new her? This is such a fun premise. There were a few times that I was scared Ms. Toliver would get too cliche, but I was pleasantly surprised. The book kept moving and there were enough twists to not feel overdone. I thought this was a great fun read and highly recommend it. I even got a little nervous while reading the climax of the book. hee hee -- so fun!

ORIGINALITY PRIZE! Super fun read--takes me back to high school

Wendy Toliver is a wonderful writer with a powerful voice and a superb idea for her novel, Secret Life of a Teenage Siren. This book includes vivid imagery, references to popular culture, and is definitely in touch with the young adult genre. The protagonist, Roxy, faces a life changing event when she discovers she is a siren who has control over men (yes, the very sirens from Greek mythology and The Odyssey). I imagine this is every girl's dream--wait, every female's dream...to have such sovereignty over men. Homer would be proud to know that his story lives on in this modern day tale of love and adventure. I am a junior high school English teacher and certainly not a young adult. However, I enjoyed this book very much. It took me back to my high school years and the conflicts I experienced among groups. I could picture my own former Eva the Diva (antagonist) and "proud crowd" as I read, and could relate to the characters' dilemmas by drawing from my own experiences. There are some great lessons in this book regarding self esteem, friendship, and the teenage search for love in all the wrong places. Though her transformation is quite dramatic, Roxy ultimately remains true to herself, thus adding depth to her character and the overall story. If you're looking for a fun read, want to learn more about the Odyssey and sirens, and appreciate pure originality--this book is for you! This book pulls you in from the start. I believe even reluctant readers would agree. After reading Secret Life of a Teenage Siren, I look forward to Wendy Toliver's next book!
