Philly's life changes when she stumbles across an old journal. Opening it, she releases the ghost of Thomas Jefferson. He befriends Philly and teaches her about the founding of the United States.

As Philly gets to know her new friend, she stumbles on a mystery-a letter from 1803 about a young slave named Israel who was hanged for a crime he didn't commit. Determined to uncover the truth, Philly and her schoolmate Fred become amateur detectives with help from Mr. Jefferson and other historical ghosts.

Then disaster strikes. The journal disappears. Without it, will Philly be able to see her ghostly friend again? Will she and Fred complete their quest to clear Israel's name?
