This thought-provoking, but sometimes humorous, novella is set in the year 1828, on a plantation outside of Charleston, South Carolina. When pirate ships invade the coastal regions, the pirates slowly move inland kidnapping all the people they find and taking them as slaves-but they miss two 12-year-old girls who are in hiding. Mary is the daughter of the plantation owners, and Rosie is the daughter of their house slave, Belle.

For their entire lives, Rosie and Mary have been forbidden by their parents to have any interaction, and now they are thrust together and must depend on each other for their very survival. This novella, written with teens and young adults in mind, takes these two young girls, and a lazy hound dog named Skeeter, from being complete strangers into a relationship that must be built on total trust and friendship. And, a lot of this amazing transition takes place in an underground root cellar that is now their only safe place-their secret hideaway.
