When Elizabeth Fielding met and married her dream man while working at the Admiralty in 1942 she was expecting a happy future, but her dream man became a nightmare until he was killed six months later during a London air raid. The winter of 1945-46 was one of the worst in modern history with heavy snow and freezing conditions and after surviving a bout of pneumonia, Liz' is invited by her grandmother to recuperate at Mallards, the family farm in Cambridgeshire, where with her grandmother's care, and surrounded by the countryside and horses, Liz slowly regains her health. Still suffering the results of her disastrous marriage, she cheerfully tells her Grandmother she has definitely decided to avoid all relationships in the near future, especially any that look like becoming serious! One morning, while running an errand for her grandmother on her bike she narrowly escapes a serious accident and meets a very angry Wing Commander from the nearby RAF airfield where the airlift of food for Germany is taking place and discovers she has to get used to the thunder of planes flying low over the farm as they take off. She is relieved to discover the horses are accustomed to it too! Recovered from her illness, Liz is reluctantly preparing to return to London when her Grandmother slips and breaks her ankle while attending an auction in aid of the war effort and Liz, enjoying her new life, helping out with her Grandmothers horses and making good friends, happily volunteers to stay on at Mallards until it heals. But life at Mallards becomes unexpectedly dramatic when Liz and her new friend, groom Izzy, discover the body of a man in the hay barn! The body seems somehow connected with her cousin and despite good advice, Liz gets involved with solving the mystery, at the same time helping her Grandmother deal with a difficult aunt and encouraging her in a courtship with a wealthy neighbour while attempting to sidestep an involvement of her own!
