The Second Amendment and the Heller Decision

This critique examines the impact of the Heller decision on second amendment rights of citizens. It looks back to precedents in English Law and practice and contends that the ownership of firearms was to provide protection by "well-regulated militia" for the public defense. That purpose has been largely ignored in the wide application of gun ownership unrelated to that purpose. The second ammendment has come to mean almost anyone may possess a firearm without reference to the original meaning.
