The fictional stories span five years in a very real Italian village which claims independence, based upon historical links to the Knights Templar. Alessandra was born in Seborga with a title she strove hard to shake off. She moved to America, where she gained a title that she badly wanted to keep. Ben's entire adult life in England had been spent on a steady downward trajectory which looked like it was heading for a crash landing in Italy. Neither had been lucky in love nor had fortune smiled upon them. Their prospects did not look good.
