He tries to warn the Mindbenders that they are under the spell of the ruler of the sea, Apollyon, the red sea serpent, and his minions, the muses. Joe concludes that sanity is the belief and acceptance of the popular mythologies of the society in which one lives. His frustration with the artificial life he is leading as a PsychoCyborg, a mentally arranged person in a world where truth has been abandoned, drives him to seek another world, where he finds true life.
