A fisherman's son on the coast of Japan fears for his father's safety on the water in the face of a storm and finds reassurance in the natural world around him.
One of the most beautiful children's books to grace my classroom library. Gentle and full of wonder. I like the manner in which it fosters awe for nature's wonders, and also the concept of the passage of time and the resulting changes in the environment (sea and sky) as well as the concept of the horizon line. This book serves as excellent inspiration for art projects about landscapes. NOTE- Parents of very small children might want to preview the book before reading it aloud, since the child is shown wandering around alone and unsupervised in some potentially dangerous situations along the seaside(his father is out at sea on his fishing boat at the time). I add a reassuring comment that his mother (not even mentioned in the book) is watching him from their home. Don't let this discourage you, though, it's a wonderful book for all ages...
