In her book, The Screwed-Up Child, the author relates her own experiences growing up in desperate times only to rise above the ashes like a phoenix. She understands how the challenging struggles of erratic behavior, disorientation, depression, addictions, and low self-esteem make it impossible for kids to perform even the smallest tasks let alone take care of themselves on an everyday basis. The emotional, physical, and/or sexual safety of our children is no longer guaranteed by their caretakers. She expects that we have all witnessed this to some degree. So why do we turn our backs on a growing problem that adversely impacts whole communities? Childhood trauma if not resolved will result in severe long-term effects and sets the stage for more trauma. Susan worked with these same kids who are suffering from neglect, child abuse, abandonment, poverty, and much more. Clearly more help is needed. Her message throughout the book reads from hopelessness to healing. Aren't our children worth it?
