A Lord comes across a young woman en route to her new job as a governess in Scotland. She has fallen into the hands of some dangerous felons. He rescues her. She's bruised and shaken so he gets her to the nearest inn to rest before she continues on her journey. Unfortunately, two gentleman at the inn question their being together at the inn, and begin to upset the young lady all over again with their unwelcome questions. The Lord states that they've just gotten married to hush them up. What he doesn't realize is that in Scotland, just stating you're married in front of two witnesses is legal and binding which the Lord soon discovers. Now they're stuck!The more they think about the situation however, they begin to think it might suit them both. He is sick to death of all the matchmaking mamas after him all the time, and she has no real desire to be a governess. Therefore, they talk it over and decide to leave things as they are. The two soon develop a repore and become friends. There are a number of domestic mishaps that befall them which the reader will enjoy. The development of their growing feelings is well done.
