Klaus Vegner, a police captain in Twente, who becomes obsessed with solving the apparent suicide of a Colombian-Dutch scientist, closes the case right before his retirement, but the incoherence of the facts haunts him until his dead.

Three years later, Marcos Gandara Verastegui, a young Barcelona police officer and Interpol agent, is transferred to Holland to support the Twente police's Anti-Narcotics Division. While settling into his new position, Marcos apparently stumbles upon the closed case and decides to reopen it, believing that there are too many loose ends to solve.

The journey takes him through Holland, France, and Colombia, as he uncovers hidden evidence and tries to connect the complex elements to the reality he sees. As Marcos delves deeper into the case, he faces disappointment, learning, betrayal, and a lot of emotions who also encourage him to keep going. Besides he gets immersed in individual conflicts that society is supposedly meant to have overcome but are still present, adding to the incongruities Marcos encounters when trying to resolve the case.
