Rarely do I find a children's book which is as captivating for the parent as it is for the child. The Saving Name of God the Son combines the inspiring artwork of Fra Angelico with Holy Scripture so as to introduce young readers to the mysteries of the Catholic faith without overwhelming them. At the same time, the adult reader could easily spend much time meditating on the profound meaning of these scriptural passages while reflecting on the moments in Christ's life depicted by Fra Angelico. The book follows chronologically the life of Christ, beginning with the Annunciation and ending with Christ as King in heaven. This is a good book for parents to interact with young children, asking them questions such as, "Where is baby Jesus? What is Jesus holding in his hand? What is happening in the picture?" The large size of the illustrations and the layout design draws the reader's attention to the exquisite artwork. The durable board book ensures that it will last through many readings. The small size size makes it ideal for little hands. Credits at the end of the book allow for older children and adults to do further research into the text or artwork. There are many books a parent can read to his or her children, but few are as inspiring, faith filled, or artistically exquisite as The Saving Name of God the Son.
Art and Faith for Little Ones

It may seem like a funny idea to some, to have a children's board book illustrated with paintings from the early Renaissance, but I think this is only because it's an uncommon idea. People today seem to underestimate the great capacity of very young children for beauty and mystery. This is the first in a series of three books on the Trinity - and this one focuses on God the Son. Each page has a lovely painting by early Renaissance artist Fra Angelico, illustrating a scene from the Life of Christ. The paintings are accompanied by short, rich text that speaks of who Jesus is. It's a very quick read, just a few lines per page, but thoughtfully put together and one that can be reflected on over and over again. An "Art and Text References" segment in back includes references to the Bible and the Catechism of the Catholic Church for each painting. These would be great for further discussion and family study. My children were immediately captivated by this colorful book and its friendly size and shape. We're very much looking forward to the other books in the series as well.
