Book Overview

With more than half a million copies of her novels sold, Naomi Ragen has connected with the hearts of readers as well as reviewers who have met her work with unanimous praise. In The Saturday Wife , Ragen utilizes her fluid writing style--rich with charm and detail--to break new ground as she harnesses satire to expose a world filled with contradiction. Beautiful, blonde, materialistc Delilah Levy steps into a life she could have never imagined when in a moment of panic she decides to marry a sincere Rabbinical student. But the reality of becoming a paragon of virtue for?a demanding and hypocritical congregation leads sexy Delilah into a vortex of shocking choices which spiral out of comtrol into a catastrophe which is as sadly believeable as it is wildly amusing. Told with immense warmth, fascinating insight, and wicked humor, The Saturday Wife depicts the pitched and often losing battle of all of us as we struggle to hold on to our faith and our values amid the often delicious temptations of the modern world.

I loved this book...

While I understand some of the other reviewers not 'liking' the main character, Delilah, I found her to be extremely 'real'. None of us are perfect, and we all have hopes and dreams for our lives. Honestly, I found myself being able to relate to Delilah's flawed character much more than the highly religious, 'perfect' college roommate she has. One of the things I enjoyed about this book was the juxtoposition of wanting to be 'just like the popular kids' (or adults) and wanting a close relationship with God. To me, Delilah emobodied this question of faith vs fortune/popularity. I think many of us, from many religious traditions, can relate to Delilah. I thoroughly relished this book because of Delilah's flaws, not because I overlooked them.

Naomi's done it again!

The heralding of a new Naomi Ragen novel is always cause for celebration, and this latest offering from Ms. Ragen does not disappoint. Though satire is not something we're used to from Naomi she captures aspects of modern Orthodox life in America in a terrific "tongue in cheek" way, and also subtlely imparts lessons and wisdom. A working knowledge of Judaism in general, and modern Orthodoxy in particular, may be helpful, but all in all, this is a great read that I for one, read in one sitting. My advice to Sabbath observers - buy it now, but save it for Shabbos! Way to go, Naomi! Thanks again!

original, thought-provoking and laugh- out- loud funny- loved it !

Naomi Ragen has done it again! The Saturday Wife is the perfect read:original, thought-provoking and laugh- out- loud funny. I loved the descriptions of the characters and what happens to them is just so amazingly realistic. True, it's over the top, but that's what makes it so wonderful. You can just see it all happening this way. I suppose it might be a little difficult for people outside the community to really appreciate just how well she has captured the nuances of this world. But for those in the know, it is brilliant. I especially loved the ending, which lets the reader punish the anti-heroine as much or as little as they think she deserves. It's not too often that I can say wholeheartedly, it's the best book I've read in a long, long time.

Funniest Naomi Ragen book yet!

This is a bit of a shift from the last few books, but only in the sense that it is much much funnier. It's a perfect read- funny, moving, entertaining, and the pages just keep turning! Moreover, to anyone who's familiar with this world- every single word will ring true. I promise you will never forget the lead character Delilah. I loved it!
