The Sarva-Darsana-Samgraha

By Madhava

Sixteen rival visions of reality meet in a single philosophical arena. Rather than treating Indian philosophy as one continuous doctrine, this searching comparative survey sets distinct systems beside one another, allowing their claims about knowledge, selfhood, religious understanding and liberation to emerge through argument and opposition. Each position is presented as part of a larger contest over what can be known, what truly exists and how freedom may be understood. The arrangement follows an ascending sequence shaped by an Advaita Vedanta perspective, moving through competing schools towards non-dualistic thought. Yet the work's fascination lies not only in its destination, but in the breadth of debate it preserves. Materialist views stand alongside religious and metaphysical traditions, receiving exposition as well as critique; some of these positions survive here despite the loss of their own writings. The structure therefore reveals both the diversity of Indic thought and the methods by which one system defines itself against another. Philosophical classification becomes a form of intellectual encounter, as rival accounts of reality and knowledge are examined on their own terms before being placed within a wider hierarchy. The treatise invites close attention to the assumptions beneath belief, perception and liberation, while its comparative method makes disagreement central to understanding. It is a concentrated record of doctrines in conversation and conflict, preserving arguments that might otherwise remain inaccessible and presenting Vedanta philosophy within a broad field of alternatives. This book was out of print for decades and is now republished by Alpha Editions. It has been restored for today's and future generations. This edition is not just a reprint - it's a collector's item and a cultural treasure.
