The Salted Cup: Jataka Tale Rhymes

By Samuel DenHartog

A crowded tavern, a well-meaning apprentice, and one very bad idea set this ancient tale in motion. When the young worker notices customers eating salt alongside their drinks, he decides the obvious solution is to mix the salt directly into the liquor. What seems like a clever improvement quickly sends every customer rushing for the door.

Long before this mishap at Jetavana, the very same mistake had already happened in the bustling city of Benares. There, another tavern keeper leaves his apprentice in charge, only to return and discover that an entire supply of spirits has been ruined. The foolish act reaches the Treasurer of Benares, who sees in the disaster a striking example of what can happen when enthusiasm races ahead of understanding.

Told by the Buddha as a memory of a former life, this lively Jātaka follows one small mistake across two lifetimes and turns it into a sharp, memorable lesson. With humor, frustration, and a touch of absurdity, the tale shows how even the best intentions can go badly wrong when knowledge is left behind.
