The Salt-Laced House

By: Von Braun, J.

She has come the long way - train, bus, and her own two feet - to a whitewashed room above a cold northern sea, carrying the one thing she could not name and could not set down. Here, where the tide folds in and pulls back and the light moves all day on the water, she means to be still. To be all right. She is nearly sure of it.

But the sea keeps its own counsel, and the past arrives unannounced - in the whistle of a kettle, a voice humming just below the true note, a hand once laid over her own.

The Salt-Laced House is a luminous, tender novel of the rooms we flee to and the ones we carry with us - and of how a life, like a coastline, is shaped as much by what the water takes as by what it leaves. Drawn out from a story first published in Salt-Laced Pages and set among public-domain paintings chosen to match its weather, it is a quiet book for anyone who has ever gone away to be mended and found the mending slower, and stranger, and more merciful than they had planned.

Includes the companion short story The Skin Beneath.
