Book Overview

"Khaw's poetic prose and stylish approach to gore make it a blood-soaked, unforgettable gem." --The New York Times

From Cassandra Khaw, USA Today bestselling author of Nothing But Blackened Teeth, comes The Salt Grows Heavy, a razor-sharp and bewitching fairy tale of discovering the darkness in the world, and the darkness within oneself.

A Best Horror Book of 2023 (The New York Times, Library Journal) - A Best Book of 2023 (NPR) - A Bram Stoker and Shirley Jackson Award Finalist - An Indie Next Pick

You may think you know how the fairy tale goes: a mermaid comes to shore and weds the prince. But what the fables forget is that mermaids have teeth. And now, her daughters have devoured the kingdom and burned it to ashes.

On the run, the mermaid is joined by a mysterious plague doctor with a darkness of their own. Deep in the eerie, snow-crusted forest, the pair stumble upon a village of ageless children who thirst for blood, and the three "saints" who control them.

The mermaid and her doctor must embrace the cruelest parts of their true nature if they hope to survive.

Includes the bonus short story, "And In Our Daughters, We Find a Voice", set in the same universe.

I thought I was getting a dark little mermaid horror tale… What I got instead was something far more

I went into The Salt Grows Heavy by Cassandra Khaw expecting a dark but somewhat whimsical mermaid horror fairy tale… and I could not have been more wrong. What unfolds instead is something far more grotesque, haunting, and strangely beautiful. Khaw does not shy away from the macabre. The graphic imagery woven throughout the story is vivid and unsettling, painting a world that feels both mythic and deeply disturbing. This is not your traditional fairy tale. It is a brutal unraveling of one. Khaw’s writing style is sharp and poetic in a way that makes the horror feel almost elegant. Every page carries a sense of decay and unease, yet there is something mesmerizing about the way the story unfolds. The atmosphere alone pulls you deeper into its bleak, salt-stained world. Beneath the blood and bone, there is also a quiet exploration of transformation, survival, and what remains of us after cruelty reshapes the world around us. This may be a short read, but it leaves a lasting impression. The Salt Grows Heavy is haunting, visceral, and unapologetically dark—perfect for readers who enjoy horror that lingers.

Mary Shelley Romance

This was a beautiful and gory gothic romance, I loved it.

Dnf

This was my first DNF book in years. The word salad in this novella was overwhelming. Not sure who the author was trying to impress with the overwhelming amount of word combinations. I was excited about the topics of the book: plague doctors, mermaids, and fables but I could not follow anything.
