The Saga of Heracles Penoit chronicles the adventures of a young boy who was kidnapped in front of his home in the French Quarter of New Orleans at the beginning of the Reconstruction Period right after the end of the Civil War. The street pirates who nabbed him forced his hand by requiring his involvement with the transport of illegal slaves up the Mississippi River. When the paddle wheeler exploded and caught fire, he escaped with his life, but began the unenviable trek of wandering into one big life threatening adventure after another. When the Union Army General's granddaughter snuck onto the skiff Mr. Heracles was escaping in, he found himself protecting her and himself against renegade soldiers intent on finding them and shutting their mouths for good. Since he had learned the ways of the wild early on by some backwoods Cajuns, he used his grit to keep both of them in food, shelter, and free from danger. At least so far, that is, but this continuing saga has only just begun.
