The Westfield River, located in Western Massachusetts, has much to offer. It has on occasion been referred to as "beauty and the beast". The beauty of the river is the meandering tranquil path it takes as it passes through ten towns, primarily within the Hilltown area. The beast connotation, once associated with the Westfield River, seems to no longer apply. Man made efforts involving the construction of two significant dams has effectively taken the "beast" out of the Westfield River. Construction of the Knightville and Littleville Dams was essential to all of those who live within its banks "downstream". As positive as the dams were to some residents, the same cannot be said for others. The Sacrificial Land tells the story of the significant opportunities that the Westfield River has provided thru the years. The title of the book, however, is clearly focused on the inhabitants of the villages of Knightville, Indian Hollow and Littleville who sacrificed their property and homestead so that others could live without fear of the Westfield River "beast". "Giveth and Taketh".....the Westfield River has seen it all!
