Young Changyao is captivated by the root carving craftsmanship of Shopkeeper Han from Baoshi Hall. Han takes Changyao on as an apprentice, and Changyao befriends a girl named Mengyun, who performs Peking Opera. When Mengyun injures her leg, Changyao crafts a uniquely designed walking stick for her.

Determined to showcase Chinese root carving at the World Expo, Changyao and his master travel along the Yangtze River, creating a monumental piece titled The Great River Flows East. However, when traitors attempt to present this masterpiece to the puppet state of Manchukuo, Changyao and his master resolutely sink their work into the river. The traitors then try to force Mengyun to perform at their celebration ceremony, but she once again breaks her leg to refuse participation.
