Gilt without guilt

This book holds an extraordinary collection of photographs of the treasures of Czarist Russia. Each Czar or epoch is briefly presented in narrative text, but the foremost value of this book is its richly photographed icons, regalia, objets d'art, architecture and painting. What the book lacks in its comprehensiveness is more than met by its focus on photography and exquisite photographic detail--those of the Monomakh crown and of Faberge eggs are breath-stopping. This book is a wonderful accompaniment for those who read Russian history but will give salubrious delight to all in this overview of Czarist culture, high art and awesome wealth.
