From a hillside in Clarendon, Jamaica, to engineering offices in Canada, to the red earth of Ghana-one woman's journey across countries, disciplines, and definitions of home.
Rhoshell Baker was born in Curatoe Hill, Jamaica, where she learned to carry water, read the sky, and watch her mother teach neighborhood boys to sign their names while she herself struggled to read. At sixteen, she left everything she knew for America-arriving with practical intelligence, hunger for opportunity, and a literacy gap that would take years to close.
The Rough Roads is the story of a life built one difficult step at a time. From food service and retail work to electronics school and a B.S. in Electronics Engineering. From CAD technician to civil engineering technologist to college professor. From a failed first attempt at college to a career that crossed two countries and multiple disciplines. From a triplet pregnancy that ended with one surviving son and a move to Canada with a newborn.
With unflinching honesty and hard-won wisdom, Baker explores what it means to learn when the page terrifies you, to build a career while raising a family, to carry Jamaica and America and Canada and Ghana without ranking them, and to find home in multiple places at once.
This is not a story of rescue or transformation from nothing. It is a story of what happens when a woman who was already intelligent, already capable, already determined finally gains access to the tools she was missing-and then refuses to let difficulty have the final word.
