In the next book, they've gotten the cows to Abeline, but Pecos is still hurt and Andy refuses to leave his pa.
When his pal, Hasty, talks him into going to a saloon, he meets a young girl dressed like a boy, stealing money from drunks. It turns into a powerful connection. Jo is older than she looks and lives with her grandpa in a stable he owns until suddenly, Grandpa dies. Jo is on her own and she must run the stable.
While his pa slowly recovers, Andy helps this girl, until he gets a job with the Pinkertons. He's doing good. He and Jo grow closer.
Then in book three, 'The Roper Robbers', Andy hits his stride with the Pinkertons. It seems he has a knack for this kind of work, and after another train robbery, Andy tracks the crooks to the ranch and is a big part of the sting operation to nab them. In the middle of this excitement, Andy takes a break to marry Jo, the woman he loves. And then it's back to work.
