Long before the drought broke Jack Coleman's world, something in the stars had already chosen it.
On a dying farm near Oakhaven, Jack and his mother Elara are living one bad decision at a time. The fields are gray, the garden is dead, the flour jar shows its bottom, and the family cow may be the last thing between them and hunger. Then, on the road to market, Jack meets a nameless merchant who offers five black seeds in place of honest ruin.

Beneath the Coleman farm, an ancient alien force begins to root itself into the soil, the house, the livestock, the bodies of the living, and the sky above the valley. The first stalk rises. And somewhere beyond the clouds, in a realm of fungal towers and living harvests, the thing behind the seeds prepares a wider seeding of Earth.
But the Garden is not unopposed. A colossal being known only as the Warden, last survivor of a world already consumed, stands against it with the bitter knowledge of what will happen if the seeds take hold. To stop the harvest, Jack must choose between the false mercy that saved his mother too late and the brutal witness required to wound an appetite vast enough to farm entire planets.
The Root That Reached Down is a dark cosmic horror novel about drought, alien growth, living roots, rural desperation, and the war that begins when a starving world mistakes invasion for salvation.
