A charming look at the various occupants of a rented room
Published by Thriftbooks.com User , 20 years ago
This small volume permits the reader to glimpse the lives of twelve individuals, families, or groups that occupy a rented room in a small brick building over the course of approximately one hundred years. The first occupants are a young couple at the turn of the century (judging by their clothing). Their son is born in the room, grows up, becomes a cowboy and moves away. The couple ages and eventually moves to a warmer climate. Two sparrows move in and raise a family. The next human occupants are a couple with a little girl. They live there briefly before emigrating to Iceland. The room is then occupied in rapid succession by a mysterious man who plants a pear tree near the window; a dressmaker with at least seventeen cats; a family of acrobats; a plumber who collects kites; twin bank robbers; a dentist with at least sixteen pet ducks; a band of Irish musicians; a family of artists; and a magician who does incredible tricks that are only witnessed by the little boy next door, who peeks in through the window. The brief text enhances the beautifully detailed illustrations. Alert readers will also notice the changing landscape through the room's window.
