Significant Text Analysing Several Historic Viewpoints on Romans

There are significant contributions made by the following authors: F.F. Bruce, James Dunn, Francis Watson, Peter Stuhlmacher, Gunter Klein, Gunther Bornkamm as well as others. The standouts for me personally were the articles by Dunn and Watson. I have to admit that I like the position Dunn has taken within the New Perspective. I think some of the adherents that have piggy backed him in using his coined term 'the New Perspective' have gone too far but Dunn remains quite level headed and has applied exegesis to manifest his hermeneutical position rather than the other way around (which of course is unlike many others within the NP). If you are interested in a more complete position from Dunn I would suggest purchasing his The Theology of Paul the Apostle or The New Perspective on Paul. Both are excellent and should be read completely before criticising him. Francis Watson's Paul, Judaism, and the Gentiles: Beyond the New Perspective was woeful in my opinion; yet here his article is fantastic. He gives a persuasive argument for the Jews as the 'weaker' brethren and the Gentiles as the 'stronger'. Perhaps even one of the most persuasive arguments ever written on the topic of the 'weak' and the 'strong' in Romans 14 & 15.

The Roman's Debate, edited by Karl Donfried, is collection of papers by respected scholars on Paul's letter to the Romans. This covers much of the major studies up to 1991. The papers deal with various ways Roman's has been approached; as Paul's last will and testament, the study of rhetoric, the Jewish and Roman Christian audience, form criticism, historical and sociological settings, structure and theology. The book has a great bibliography and index. Much of this is still fresh, even after 10 years. I recommend it for the serious Pauline student.
