The Role of Soil Science in Interdisciplinary Research
No Customer Reviews
Although food security is a continuing concern of governments around the world, environmental quality, land use, and protection of our natural resources are important issues as well. The development of sound government policy can benefit from a better understanding of the linkages between soil science with these other critical areas. As we approach the end of the twentieth century, governments will increasingly depend on scientific knowledge to protect the environment, to maintain biodiversity, and to plan for proper use of our land resources. The increasing opportunities for soil scientists to interact with ecologists, biologists, engineers, and social scientists will enhance the visibility and importance of our science outside the traditional agricultural arena. Through such interactions with other disciplines, we may also determine which areas of soil science require further fundamental research to enhance our ability to solve and understand problems of the environment, biodiversity, and land use planning. This feedback will offer soil science the opportunity to remain an active and progressive scientific discipline unto itself.
