The Road to Sharpsburg tells the story of young Rufus Randall, West Point graduate and 2nd Lieutenant in the U.S. Army serving at Army Headquarters in the summer of 1962. He receives a telegram from his sister telling him his father, a judge and confederate supporter in what will become the new state of West Virginia, has been arrested and charged with treason to the United States. Hoping to save his father, he travels back home to find his father in jail and stumbles upon a Confederate plot to free him. Forced to defend himself from the Union troops who are attacking his family, Randall rides with Confederate raiders after being listed as a deserter from the Union Army he loves. His involvement with a beautiful female spy leads to a secret mission to Harper's Ferry as the Confederate army moves north to invade Maryland. His involvement in the battle Sharpsburg ends up cementing his loyalties to the men he serves with, if not to the Confederate cause.
