On a perfectly ordinary morning by the sea, Groundhog said to Otter, "Why don't you leave the ocean and come live with me in the hills?" At this, Otter looked to the hills and to the great mountain behind them, and it was not hard for him to imagine what marvelous things might lie on the other side of it all...So begins the first of the Road Parables, a simple story to illustrate a universal truth. For aren't we all otters who have left the ocean that gives us life? Sometimes the simplest truths are got at obliquely. That's what parables do. They show us one thing by pointing to something else nearby, something just off the path we're on. These stories, in and of themselves, are simple, readable, elegant. But each points to something beyond the tale.
