the river

I met Claus along his beloved "river" and have enjoyed getting to know him. His writing is wonderful --- his life has been a marvel! In "the river" he continues his "long walk" through life. So much has been overcome. I was so glad he shared his poetry at the conclusion because it truly reveals his soul. A wonderful, gentle spirit and a joy to know!

A Light For Us To Follow

As an 82-year-old survivor of the terrible carnage of World War II and very fearful of the potential for human disaster currently extant, let me guide you to hope and to see the beauty of the human soul. Claus Hackenberger has lived through hell and shines a light for us to follow. Read his book The River.

the river

I have been waiting for "the river" since finishing "A Long Walk" for the second time!! Though the wait was difficult, it was truly worthwhile. Claus has written a deeply soul searching tome about the character we met as Paul in the first book. How marvelous it is to see a person grow in wonder, in joy, in understanding - and not give up despite all the difficulties he placed, on the main, in his own way. One of the aspects that I really like about "the river" is how everything ties together so well - from the fine artistry of the pictures to the illuminating photographs to the insightful narrative to the lyrical realizations in the poetry and the short stories. Just wait until you read "winter!" My very favorite! I just hope that Claus will continue to write and share of himself with us!! No matter - if you have a chance to meet Claus and hear him talk, do not miss it! He is absolutely fascinating to listen to!!

The River

Claus Hackenberger is a master storyteller. The River is an exciting narrative of Mr. Hackenberger's (Paul Berck) life in Europe after he escaped from a French prison camp following WW II, he struggles through a prestigious Engineering German University, and then immigrates to the United States. Here his life becomes a series of tremendous successes only to be followed by monumental disasters, mostly of his own making. The story of his journey is multifaceted with clear, carefully worded sentences and thoughts that not only paint an indelible picture of the scenes and their characters, but also his philosophies at the time. These descriptions are so real, so complete, that the reader will believe he is right there with Paul Berck and feeling the intensity of the situation. As a bonus, and a tribute to Mr. Hackenberger's writing ability, he completely changes his writing style from standard fiction text to one of non-fiction prose and poetry with a variety of printing formats. He offers some very thought provoking philosophies in the collection of prose and poetry; each with a special "sermon" that if followed, could easily make our world a better place to enjoy. This is a "Five Star" Book.
